Siberian ginseng

Recent studies involving the application of Siberian ginseng extract proved:

  • in experimental glucocorticosteroid-induced osteoporosis, Siberian ginseng extract showed a protective effect
    (Bull Exp Biol Med 2002, 133, 3, 252-4),

  • it inhibited mast cell-mediated anaphylaxis reaction observed in vivo and in vitro in murine model
    (J Ethnopharmacol. 2002, 79,3, 347-52),

  • it shows potent antiviral activity - inhibits the replication of RNA viruses causing human respiratory system infections
    (Antiviral Res 2001, 50, 3, 223-8).

J Med Assoc Thai 2004 Feb; 87(2): 137-44

The double blind test, controlled to placebo, in which ginkgo biloba leaves extract was used in patients suffering from vertigo, the observed result turned out to be effective and safe.

Clin Exp Dermatol 2003 May;28(3):285-7

The results obtained from the study on paracetamol induced hepatic damage in rats indicate its hepatoprotective nature, which is comparable to that of silymarin.

(Indian J Physiol Pharmacol 2002, 46, 167-74)

The Ginkgo biloba extract administrated to patients with normal tension glaucoma appears to improve preexisting visual field damage.

(Ophtamology 2003, 110, 359-62)

Administration of Ginkgo biloba extract to patients with tinnitus appears to be effective and safe in allevating this symptom.

Isoflavones of soy

The clinical studies demonstrated that a diet rich in soy isoflavones causes an increased maturity index of the epithelial cells in the vagina. The effect has a clinical importance since it prevents vaginal atrophy which often occurs in post-menopausal women.

Maturitas. 2003 Aug 20; 45(4): 241-6

The clinical studies carried out in pre-menopausal women, using 100 mg soy isoflavones or placebo for 12 months demonstrated that the therapy, in contrast to the hormonal treatment, does not cause increased density in the mammographic picture of the mammary gland. What is more, there was a tendency towards a decreased density in the mammographic investigations in women using soy isoflavones.

Eur J Cancer Prev. 2003 Apr; 12(2): 165-9

The studies comparing hormonal replacement therapy (HRT) and a soy rich diet suggest that the soy products could be effective in reducing the risk of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

(Maturitas 2002, 42, 295-300)

The trial results carried out in Spain has been showed good tolerance and efficacy of soy preparation rich in isoflavones in alleviating of menopausal symptoms, especially decrease in the number of hot flushes. Additionally no side-effects were reported.

(Phytomedicine 2002, 9, 85-92)

The evaluation of Kuppermann’s sign in women using Soyfem drugs in early postmenopausal period

Kuppermaenn’s test was applied to evaluate menopausal signs in 71 women in their early postmenopausal period, who were divided into three groups depending on doses of used drugs. Group I, control, consisted of 23 women, age 49,5±4,7 ...

Cetirizine

Results of clinical studies show that cetirizine therapy reduces the total seasonal allergy by ca. 30%, and have positive effect on the quality of life, work / school productivity and activity.

(Allergy Asthma Proc 2002, 23, 391-98)

The compared studies among children show that cetirizine is more effective for relief of nasal congestion and rhinorrhea than ketotifen and oxatomide, and was responsible for significantly decreasing the eosinophil representation of a nasal smear.

(Ann Allergy Asthma Immunol 2002, 89, 589-98)

Cetirizine (and ebstatine), but not loratidine, decreases significantly whealing and accompanying pruritis in mosquito-bite allergy.

Vinpocetine

The present data on rats demonstrate that vinpocetine is capable of blocking NaV1.8 sodium channel activity and suggest a potentional additional utility in various sensory abnormalities arising from abnormal peripheral nerve activity.

(J Pharmacol Exp Ther 2003, 1)

In vitro and in vivo studies indicate that derivative of vinpocetine ? an apovincamine possesses strong neuroprotective activity and may play an important role in the therapy of ischaemic stroke.

(Acta Pharm Hung 2002, 72, 84-91)

Vinpocetine posses significantly beneficial effects in relief of climacteric symptoms and reduces total- and LDL-cholesterol level in women with hyperlipidaemia.

The report concerning potential benefits obtained from the use of preparations containing St. John?s wort extract in the treatment of chronic alcoholism.

Pharmacol Biochem Behav 2003 Jan; 75(3):593-606

The effectiveness of St. John?s wort and imipramin extracts was compared in patients with depression ? the results suggest effectiveness of the therapy using the St. John?s wort extract in the treatment of chronic depression.

Pharmacopsychiatry 2003 Jul; 36(4):161-4

The effect of St. John?s wort extract on the occurrence of erythema under the influence of UVB and UVA radiation was studied. The results of the studies in which very large doses of the extract (1800 mg) were used indicate that the drug did not cause photoallergies.
